American Masai Russell has claimed Tobi Amusan of Nigeria’s World Record in the Women’s 100m Hurdles event at the Zurich Diamond League.
Russell ran a new World Record of 12.09s to win the 100m Hurdles. Despite a fast start out of the blocks, the Nigerian queen of the tracks crossed the line in second place with a Season’s Best (SB) time of 12.23 seconds. Nadine Visser finished third in a SB of 12.34
“Competing in a world record race is amazing,” Amusan said. “I came out here and did my best and I am happy with this Season’s Best (SB).
Amusan, who had held the global benchmark for four years, put up a spirited defence of her title and produced one of her strongest races of the season.
The record-breaking showdown in Zurich highlights the incredible, high-octane depth of women’s sprint hurdling.
While Amusan relinquished her world record, her strong runner-up finish signals that she remains a prime competitor at the highest level of the sport.
The rivalry is set to ignite once more in a matter of days when both elite athletes lock horns again at the Diamond League Final in Brussels, Belgium.
