The National Population Commission (NPC) has announced the death of its Chairman, Dr Aminu Yusuf (Talban Wushishi), who died at the age of 66 after a brief illness.
In a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Mrs Adelayo Olurode, the commission said Dr Yusuf died in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, on Friday, 28 August 2026.
The commission recalled that Dr Yusuf was sworn in as the eighth substantive Chairman of the NPC by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, on 3 December 2025.
According to the statement, the late chairman would be remembered for his visionary leadership and for championing a seven-point agenda aimed at repositioning the commission.
Born on 15 April 1960 in Wushishi, Niger State, Dr Yusuf brought to the commission a distinguished record of public service spanning education, governance, grassroots politics and community development.
He previously served as Executive Chairman of Wushishi Local Government Area, Member-elect of the Niger State House of Assembly, Board Member of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), and Special Adviser on Political Affairs to the Governor of Niger State, among other positions.
Until his appointment as NPC Chairman, he was the National President of the Niger State College of Education Alumni Association, Minna, and Co-Chairman of the Senator Abubakar Sani Bello Skill Acquisition and Development Committee.
The statement described the deceased as “a dedicated patriot, an astute administrator, and a compassionate leader” whose commitment to national development and the generation of reliable demographic data remained unwavering.
The NPC extended its deepest condolences to President Tinubu and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Government and people of Niger State, and the Yusuf family.
Mrs Olurode prayed that Almighty Allah forgives his shortcomings, grants him Al-Jannah Firdaus and gives his family, friends and associates the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
