Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has declared his full support for state-born heavyweight boxer, Moses Itauma, ahead of his International Boxing Federation (IBF) World Heavyweight Championship bout against Filip Hrgovic in London.
The Governor described Itauma as a worthy ambassador of Akwa Ibom and Nigeria, whose rise in professional boxing has continued to bring pride to the state and country.
Eno commended the boxer for his dedication, courage and commitment to his profession, noting that his achievements had placed Akwa Ibom prominently on the global boxing map.
He assured Itauma that he would not be alone when he steps into the ring, stressing that the sporting community in Akwa Ibom and Nigeria would be firmly behind him.
According to the Governor, the prayers, goodwill and support of millions of Nigerians, particularly the people of Akwa Ibom, would accompany the boxer as he takes on the challenge.
He expressed confidence in the boxer’s ability and talent, encouraging him to approach the fight with determination and the winning mentality that has characterised his career.
In his message of solidarity to the IBF World Championship contender, Governor Eno said Itauma carries the collective hopes of Akwa Ibom and Nigeria into the bout.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Akwa Ibom State, I salute you for carrying the Akwa Ibom spirit of excellence and competitive drive into the world of boxing,” he said.
“…Leading you to the epochal moment, where you will hoist and carry the collective dreams of the Akwa Ibom people in particular…”
“…And Nigeria in general as you fight for the vacant title of the International Boxing Federation (IBF) World Heavyweight Championship against Filip Hrgovic,” Eno stated.
The Governor urged Itauma to demonstrate the emerging spirit and passion of Akwa Ibom exceptionalism in boxing.
“I urge you to go out there, Eyen Nyin, and show the world that you represent the emerging spirit and passion of the Akwa Ibom Exceptionalism in boxing,” he said.
“Akwa Ibom is Arising with you, the Nation too, is with you in this moment of national boxing renewal. Go and get it done!. Akwa Ibom is behind you. Nigeria is behind you. Go forth and make us proud, Moses.”
Itauma, who has recorded 14 professional victories, including 12 knockouts, traces his paternal ancestral roots to Eket in Akwa Ibom State, while his mother is from Slovakia. He was raised in Britain and has embraced his Nigerian, Slovak and British roots.
