Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has called on parents, Islamic clerics and community leaders to intensify efforts to address youth restiveness, drug abuse, hooliganism and other social vices across the state.
The governor made the call during a visits to eight Maulud processions held in different parts of Kano to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mustapha Muhammad, Yusuf expressed concern over the increasing prevalence of social vices among youths and urged stakeholders to work collectively to address the trend.
The governor particularly condemned incidents of phone snatching, hooliganism, substance abuse and the use of social media to insult or defame respected members of society.
“Kano is well known for practicing Islamic teachings and for its deep devotion to Prophet Muhammad (SAW). However, it is deeply troubling to see some disgruntled youths using social media platforms to insult people of dignity,” Yusuf said.
He urged Islamic scholars and other religious leaders to take a more active role in guiding young people, stressing the importance of collective action, counselling and prayers in addressing the challenges.
“It is completely unacceptable to see youths abusing Islamic clerics, traditional rulers, respected community elders, and political leaders on social media,” the governor stated.
During his visits to the Maulud gatherings, Yusuf also urged parents to strengthen the moral upbringing of their children, while encouraging religious leaders to intensify teachings and counselling aimed at promoting responsible behaviour among youths.
He said the state government had established a dedicated task force to combat drug abuse, illicit substances and human trafficking as part of efforts to address the challenges facing young people.
The governor said his administration was also revitalising 26 skill acquisition institutes across the state to equip youths with productive skills and create opportunities for self-reliance.
Governor Yusuf said sustained collaboration among government, families, religious institutions and communities was essential to building a more responsible, productive and peaceful youth population in Kano.
