Anambra First Lady Calls for Regular Breast Screening

By Chinwe Onuigbo, Awka

The wife of Anambra State Governor and Founder/Chief Executive Officer of Healthy Living, Dr Nonye Soludo, has urged women to prioritise breast health, embrace regular screening and seek prompt medical attention, stressing that early detection improves the chances of successful treatment.

Soludo made the call in a statement in Awka, the state capital, to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with this year’s theme, “Every Story Is Unique, Every Journey Matters,” highlighting the individual experiences of women affected by the disease and the need for compassionate support.

She encouraged women to participate in awareness campaigns, wear pink in solidarity with survivors and promote open conversations about breast cancer to overcome fear, stigma and misinformation.

“This October, let’s go all out pink, spread awareness, and remind every woman that her health really, really matters,” she said.

The Anambra First Lady urged women to seek professional medical assessment for unusual breast changes, including lumps, swelling, changes in breast shape or size, skin dimpling and abnormal nipple discharge.

She explained that breast self-awareness should complement, rather than replace, clinical assessment and recommended screening, noting that timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment could improve outcomes.

Soludo called for stronger public education and improved access to screening and cancer care, particularly for women facing financial and other barriers to healthcare.

She also urged families, healthcare professionals, community leaders and relevant organisations to support women undergoing treatment, recognising that each patient’s experience, challenges and recovery journey are different.

“We must break the silence, encourage one another, and make early detection a priority. Let’s choose awareness, hope, and action,” she said.

Soludo expressed solidarity with women living with breast cancer, emphasising that they deserved dignity, encouragement and access to appropriate medical care throughout their treatment.

“And to every woman fighting breast cancer, you are not alone. Your courage inspires us, and your life matters,” she said.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month, observed every October, seeks to promote early detection, improve public understanding of the disease and strengthen support for patients and survivors.

The campaign also highlights the importance of accessible diagnostic services, timely treatment and sustained investment in cancer care.

Health professionals advise women to consult qualified healthcare providers about their individual risk factors and appropriate screening options, as early diagnosis and timely treatment can improve outcomes.
