The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has approved the construction of a divisional police station at the Wasa Informal Sector ahead of the planned relocation of mechanics and artisans from Apo.
The Director, FCTA Security Services Department, Mr Adamu Gwari, disclosed this on Tuesday while briefing journalists after the 19th FCT Executive Council (EXCO) meeting in Abuja.
Gwari said the council approved the contract following a memo seeking the immediate provision of security infrastructure at the site.
He said the project was a new contract with a six-month completion period.
According to him, the minister had earlier directed the provision of a police station at the site during the commissioning of the sector’s initial infrastructure in July.
“The minister directed that there should be a police station that will provide security not only for the sector but for the entire area,” Gwari said.
He said the station would form part of the FCT Administration’s broader initiative to improve security infrastructure in rural and developing communities across the territory.
Gwari added that the administration had planned to construct two divisional police stations in each of the FCT’s six Area Councils.
Giving an update on the programme, he said construction was at various stages across the territory, while the FCTA Department of Public Buildings had taken delivery of two completed and furnished police stations.
“At the moment, Public Building has taken delivery of two fully completed police divisions: the one at Ushafa and the other one at Saburi,” he said.
Gwari said each of the completed facilities comprised a furnished divisional police station and a furnished six-man staff quarters.
He added that the administration would continue to provide security infrastructure across the territory as part of efforts to improve policing in developing communities.
