The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Executive Council has approved two contracts for the supply of water treatment chemicals and the renewal of insurance cover for a major water treatment facility in the territory.
The approvals were given during the council’s meeting chaired by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday in Abuja.
The Acting General Manager of the FCT Water Board, Mrs Chinyere Elechi, disclosed this while briefing journalists after the meeting.
Elechi said the first contract was for the supply of powdered chlorine, known as High-Test Hypochlorite (HTH), for the continuous treatment of water supplied to residents.
She explained that HTH was used to eliminate harmful microorganisms during water treatment and help ensure that water supplied to consumers was safe.
“This HTH is a vital disinfectant used in water treatment to eliminate pathogenic microorganisms and ensure that water reaching our consumers is safe for human consumption.
“The absence of this can lead to waterborne diseases like typhoid, cholera and dysentery,” she said.
Elechi also said the council had approved the renewal of an insurance policy covering the Lower Usman Dam Treatment Plant, a major facility for potable water treatment in the FCT.
According to her, the insurance cover would provide protection against unforeseen incidents that could affect the facility’s operations.
“As we all know, the Lower Usman Dam Treatment Plant is the place where every FCT resident gets their potable water supply from.
“The plant needs to be insured against negative occurrences. In case of any eventuality, we will not be left stranded,” she said.
The Acting General Manager said the approvals would support the continued operation of the FCT water supply system.
