President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated former Chief of Army Staff and elder statesman, General Alani Ipoola Akinrinade (rtd), on his 87th birthday, describing him as a gallant soldier and principled patriot who devoted his life to the service of Nigeria.
In a congratulatory message signed by the Presidential Spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu commended General Akinrinade for his continued service to the nation as an elder statesman and for his contributions to national unity.
The President described the retired general as “a voice of wisdom and moderation, noting his role in Nigeria’s democratic development.”
“General Akinrinade stood on the right side of history. When it was dangerous to do so, he chose democracy over dictatorship, the people over power.
“He is one of the heroes who made the Fourth Republic possible. Nigeria will forever be grateful for his courage and sacrifice,” President Tinubu said.
He said General Akinrinade’s legacy remained firmly established in Nigeria’s history, from his distinguished military career, which culminated in his leadership of the Nigerian Armed Forces, to his role as a leader of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) during the struggle for the restoration of June 12 and democracy.
The President also praised the former military chief for his continued commitment to the nation’s progress and unity.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria, the President prays for robust health, peace of mind and many more years of impactful life for General Akinrinade,” he said.
President Tinubu wished the elder statesman a happy and fulfilling 87th birthday celebration.
A veteran of the Nigerian Civil War, General Akinrinade served as Chief of Army Staff and later as Chief of Defence Staff before retiring from the military.
