Anambra First Lady Advocates Enhanced Teachers Welfare

By Chinwe Onuigbo, Awka

Anambra State  First Lady, Dr Nonye Soludo, has called for improved welfare, professional development and better working conditions for teachers, describing them as critical to Nigeria’s human capital development.

Mrs Soludo, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, made the call in a statement to mark the 2026 World Teachers’ Day, themed “The Teachers We Need for the Education We Want: The Global Imperative to Reverse the Teacher Shortage.”

She said the theme highlighted the need to strengthen the teaching profession and address the shortage of qualified teachers threatening education systems globally.

According to her, teachers do more than impart knowledge; they help shape the character, values, confidence, and aspirations of children who will eventually contribute to national development.

“Behind every great mind is a dedicated teacher who believed, inspired and nurtured it,” she said, describing teachers as the patient hands that shape destinies, the voices that awaken dreams and the unsung heroes whose impact lives on for generations.

The First Lady urged governments and other stakeholders to give greater attention to teachers’ welfare, including fair remuneration, conducive working environments, professional training and opportunities for career development.

She said better conditions for teachers were necessary to attract and retain qualified professionals and improve the quality of education available to Nigerian children.

Mrs Soludo stressed that investment in teachers was an investment in the country’s future, noting that the quality of education would significantly influence Nigeria’s human capital, productivity and long-term development.

“Your dedication goes far beyond the classrooms. Every lesson you teach is a seed planted for a better tomorrow,” she said.

Anambra First Lady urged Nigerians to recognise teachers not only on World Teachers’ Day but through sustained support for measures that protect their dignity and improve their professional and personal welfare.

“Thank you for building the future, one child at a time. Thank you for moulding humanity,” Mrs Soludo added.
