Ethiopia’s Parliament has re-elected Abiy Ahmed as Prime Minister for another five-year term, following the June 1 General election.
Ahmed took the oath of office at a ceremony attended by President Taye Atske Selassie and other senior government officials, formally beginning his new term.
His ruling Prosperity Party won 438 of the 547 parliamentary seats in the election, paving the way for his re-election.
The development comes amid renewed fighting between Ethiopian government forces and the newly formed Ethiopian Peoples’ Forces Alliance for Survival, which is seeking to overthrow the government.
The Ethiopian government has accused neighbouring countries of supporting armed groups involved in the conflict, including Eritrea.
Ethiopia announced the closure of its embassy in Eritrea, further straining relations between the two neighbouring countries.
The renewed fighting and diplomatic tensions pose fresh challenges for Ahmed as he begins his new five-year mandate.
