Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, has pardoned nine inmates serving various terms in correctional facilities across the state and commuted the death sentence of another inmate to life imprisonment.
The measures were approved to mark Nigeria’s 2026 Independence Day anniversary.
Those pardoned and released are Abubakar Dajo, serving at the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Jos; Zabadi Ayuba and Salvation Nyamso, serving at the Numan Custodial Centre.

Others are Amir Idris, Mohammed Saidu, Yaro Sambo, Buhari Salisu, Urube Samuel and Bamaiyi Amos, who were held at the Jimeta, Ganye, Guyuk, Yola Old and Kojoli Custodial Centres.
Fintiri also commuted the death sentence imposed on Saidu Abdullahi, an inmate at the Yola Old Custodial Centre, to life imprisonment.
The decisions were based on the advice of the Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy and in exercise of powers vested in the Governor under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.
In a statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, the pardons and commutation took immediate effect following the conclusion of all legal formalities with the Nigerian Correctional Service.
The development forms part of the state government’s activities to commemorate Nigeria’s Independence Day.
