Adamawa Marks Independence with Hospital Outreach

Golfa Francis, Yola

The Adamawa State Government has marked Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary by reaching out to mothers, newborn babies and children receiving treatment in hospitals across the state capital.

The government delegation, led by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Leader Leneke, visited the Yola Specialist Hospital and Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, Yola, where it presented cash and essential materials to patients and their families.

Leneke said the government chose the hospital outreach as a more meaningful way to commemorate the anniversary by identifying with vulnerable residents in need of medical attention.

He said the state deliberately opted for a low-key celebration, focusing instead on initiatives capable of making a direct impact on people’s lives.

The delegation visited paediatric wards, labour wards and postnatal sections of the two hospitals.

Leneke, who was accompanied by some members of the State Executive Council, described the gesture as an expression of solidarity with patients and their families.

“Rather than organising elaborate festivities, the government chose to use the occasion to reach out to people in hospitals and offer them modest assistance,” he said.

The commissioner said the government had identified some critical cases during the visit and assured the affected families that the state would intervene where necessary.

He also highlighted the state government’s policy of providing free healthcare for children aged zero to five years, saying Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri remained committed to improving access to healthcare.

“Healthcare attention is free for children aged zero to five. Governor Fintiri is passionate about the healthcare of everyone, which is why he has ensured that healthcare facilities are available close to the people,” Leneke said.

According to him, the policy is designed to make healthcare services more accessible, particularly to vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, mothers and children.

He said the initiative was part of the administration’s broader commitment to social welfare and improved healthcare delivery.

Leneke assured residents that the government would continue to implement interventions aimed at making healthcare services more accessible and responsive to the needs of the people.

The outreach formed part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary in Adamawa State.
