The Director-General of the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS), Comrade Issa Aremu, has called for comprehensive modernisation of the institute as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Aremu made the call at a Town Hall meeting in Ilorin, Kwara State, North-central, Nigeria.
The event, themed “Nigeria @ 66: Reflections on Labour Education Since Independence,” focused on the role of labour education in national development.

Aremu described MINILS as Nigeria’s foremost labour education institution, saying it has contributed to industrial harmony, workplace democracy, collective bargaining, productivity and sustainable economic development.
He, however, said ageing infrastructure, inadequate funding, technological changes and insufficient capital renewal had overstretched the institute’s facilities.
According to him, urgent redevelopment would reposition MINILS as a leading African centre for labour education, industrial relations, social dialogue, productivity development and future-of-work studies.
Aremu also commended the Tinubu administration’s labour-related measures, including the minimum wage increase, payment of pension arrears and efforts to improve public-sector employment.

He said comprehensive remodelling of MINILS would further strengthen Nigeria’s human capital, democratic institutions, industrial peace and economic development.
Located on about 12 acres of land in Ilorin, MINILS was established as an international labour education centre comparable to institutions such as the International Training Centre in Turin, Italy.
Aremu said new investment was needed to upgrade the institute’s facilities and strengthen its capacity in digital learning, research, artificial intelligence, workplace transformation, security and international collaboration.
