Anambra Anti-Touting Squad Destroys ₦50m Worth of Illicit Drugs

By Chinwe Onuigbo, Awka

The Anambra State Anti-Touting Squad (SASA) has destroyed illicit drugs valued at more than ₦50 million as part of ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking, touting and other criminal activities in the state.

The destruction exercise took place in Awka, the Anambra State capital, on Saturday, with officials saying the seized narcotics were recovered during operations across Awka and surrounding communities.

Speaking to the Voice of Nigeria during the exercise, the managing director of SASA, Mr Monday Nwokoye, said those arrested in connection with the illicit drug trade had been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.

Nwokoye said the agency destroyed the confiscated drugs to prevent them from finding their way back into circulation.

He warned drug traffickers and dealers to cease operating in Anambra State or face the full weight of the law.

According to him, the destroyed substances included cocaine, cannabis sativa, tramadol, “Ghanaian Loud,” the synthetic drug locally known as mkpulu mmiri, and other prohibited narcotics.

He reaffirmed SASA’s commitment to sustaining its operations against illicit drugs, touting and organised crime, stressing that the agency would continue to carry out its mandate without fear or favour.

Nwokoye also commended Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, for supporting the agency’s operations, saying the administration remained committed to improving public safety and tackling criminal activities across the state.

He called on residents to support security agencies by reporting suspicious activities in their communities, noting that timely information from the public would strengthen efforts to build a safer and more secure Anambra.

The destruction of the seized drugs forms part of the Anambra State Government’s broader campaign to curb drug abuse, enhance public safety and reduce crime across the state.
