Anambra Destroys Seized Drugs Worth N50 Million

Chinwe Onuigbo, Awka

The Anambra State Anti-Touting Squad (SASA) has destroyed illicit drugs worth more than ₦50 million in a renewed crackdown on drug trafficking, touting and other criminal activities across the state.

The destruction exercise was carried out on Saturday in Awka, with officials confirming that the narcotics were confiscated during a series of enforcement operations conducted within the state capital and neighbouring communities.

Speaking during the exercise, the Managing Director of SASA, Mr. Monday Nwokoye, said suspects arrested in connection with the illegal drug trade had been transferred to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and possible prosecution.

“The confiscated drugs were destroyed to ensure they do not find their way back into society. Anyone involved in drug trafficking should leave Anambra or be prepared to face the consequences of the law,” Nwokoye warned.

He disclosed that the destroyed substances included cocaine, cannabis sativa, tramadol, Ghanaian Loud, the synthetic drug popularly known as mkpulu mmiri, and several other banned narcotics.

Nwokoye reaffirmed the agency’s determination to sustain its campaign against illicit drug trafficking, street touting and organised crime, stressing that SASA would continue to enforce the law without compromise.

“Our operations will continue without fear or favour as we work to rid Anambra State of criminal elements involved in drug-related offences and other unlawful activities,” he stressed.

The SASA boss also commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for providing the necessary support that has strengthened the agency’s operations, describing the administration’s commitment to security as instrumental to the ongoing fight against crime.

He appealed to residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information on suspicious activities within their communities.

“Public support remains vital. Timely and accurate information from residents will help security agencies respond effectively and make Anambra a safer place for everyone,” the SASA boss urged.

The destruction of the seized narcotics forms part of the Anambra State Government’s broader strategy to tackle drug abuse, dismantle criminal networks and improve public safety across the state.
