Anambra Governor Rejects Separatism, Backs Dialogue

Chinwe Onuigbo, Awka

Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has called for a shift from separatist agitation to evidence-based dialogue on the place of the Igbo people within Nigeria, arguing that sustained engagement and political participation offer a more effective path to advancing regional interests.

Soludo made the call in Awka after a stage production titled “The Tale of Two Nnamdis,” performed by students of the Theatre Arts and Film Department of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

He said discussions on the Igbo position in the Nigerian federation should move beyond historical grievances and be anchored in rigorous intellectual and political discourse.

The Governor noted that current debates on the issue lacked structured engagement despite the complexity of questions surrounding the region’s role in national affairs. He urged academics, political leaders and stakeholders to pursue more constructive conversations aimed at fostering national integration and addressing longstanding concerns.

Soludo also criticised the “sit-at-home” protests in parts of the South-East, describing them as counterproductive and economically damaging.

He said the protests had caused significant economic losses and social hardship to communities they were intended to serve.

Drawing on the legacy of Nigeria’s nationalist leader, Nnamdi Azikiwe, the governor advocated dialogue, negotiation and democratic participation as the most effective means of advancing regional interests within the federation.

He argued that influence would be better achieved through active participation in the political process rather than withdrawal or confrontation.

Soludo also pointed to what he described as contradictions in regional political discourse, noting that some groups demand greater representation in national leadership while questioning the legitimacy of the Nigerian state.

He said the Igbo people must clearly define their position to engage effectively with the broader national community.

The Governor reiterated his willingness to engage all stakeholders, including leaders of agitation movements, and pledged his administration’s support for initiatives promoting civil and informed debate on regional issues.

He maintained that meaningful progress could only be achieved through dialogue, negotiation and constructive participation rather than coercion or conflict.
