Anambra Health Ministry Tackles Hospital Negligence, Absenteeism

By Chinwe Onuigbo, Awka

The Anambra State Ministry of Health has launched a crackdown on negligence and absenteeism in public hospitals after an unannounced inspection revealed significant staffing gaps, officials said.

The Director of Medical Services, Dr Ugochukwu Chukwulobelu, led a ministry team on spot checks at selected general hospitals as part of efforts to enforce discipline, strengthen accountability and address concerns over workforce attendance in the state’s health system.

At General Hospital Mbaukwu in Awka South Local Government Area, inspectors found only a handful of staff on duty, with several workers absent without explanation. The team also identified shortcomings in facility management and reported that no patients were present during the visit, raising questions about service utilisation and delivery.

The inspection reviewed compliance with operational standards, including punctuality, dress code, cleanliness, quality of care, adherence to duty rosters and administrative structure. Officials said the exercise uncovered significant lapses, particularly in staff attendance and coordination. Absent personnel were issued formal queries and given 48 hours to respond.

At General Hospital Agulu in Anaocha Local Government Area, however, most staff were present and actively engaged in their duties, although a few cases of absenteeism were still recorded.

Chukwulobelu described absenteeism as a serious breach that undermines healthcare delivery and public trust. He said the ministry would intensify monitoring and enforce disciplinary measures against erring staff.

“Any staff who fails to report to duty without a valid justification will face appropriate sanctions,” Chukwulobelu stated.

The ministry said the inspections form part of broader reforms under the administration of Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo aimed at improving access to healthcare, upgrading infrastructure and strengthening workforce discipline.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr Obiageli Uchebo, also urged health workers to uphold professional ethics, stressing that punctuality, accountability and dedication are essential to effective service delivery.

Officials said the inspection exercise would be extended to other government health facilities as part of efforts to improve efficiency and restore public confidence in the healthcare system.
