Stakeholders at a one-day Worldwide Organisation for Women Africa (WOW Africa) Conversation in Awka, Anambra State, have called on women to prioritise their health and strengthen family values as critical foundations for sustainable development and social progress.

The event attracted a large number of women, students and young girls and focused on health promotion, family orientation and personal development, with participants encouraged to pursue their aspirations while contributing positively to society.

Founded by Chief Mrs Carol Ugochukwu, WOW Africa is dedicated to advancing the welfare of women and girls, promoting community development and nurturing change-makers across Africa. Through its programmes, the organisation seeks to empower women and create opportunities for a more equitable future.

Speakers at the event commended Ugochukwu for providing a platform that addresses issues affecting women, families and communities, noting that her initiatives have continued to inspire advocacy for gender inclusion, social responsibility and human development.

Speaking at the gathering, the Anambra State Head of Service, Barrister Ngozi Iwouno, emphasised the importance of women’s physical and mental well-being, noting that healthy women are essential to stable families and a productive society. She also called for the elimination of cultural practices that undermine women’s welfare and urged greater investment in education and lifelong learning.

Delivering a presentation titled “Healthy Women for a Sustainable Society,” the immediate past Chief Medical Director of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka, Dr Joe Akabike, urged women to embrace regular medical check-ups and preventive healthcare. He stressed that women, as pillars of the home, play a crucial role in raising children with strong moral values.

Also speaking, the representative of the Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Oge Unegbe, described women as key drivers of societal transformation and urged them to adapt to changing realities by paying closer attention to family life and the upbringing of their children.

In her remarks, the South-East Coordinator of WOW Africa, Mrs Ethel Eruchalu, said the gathering provided an opportunity to confront challenges affecting families and communities. She expressed appreciation to the organisation’s founder for creating a forum that promotes dialogue and solutions on issues affecting women and society.
