TWG Commends Reps’ Progress on Constitutional Review

The Women’s Political Participation Technical Working Group (TWG) has commended the House of Representatives for advancing the constitutional amendment process, expressing optimism over the prospects of the Special Seats for Women Bill.

Speaking on behalf of the group, the National Chair of the TWG, Ebere Ifendu, clarified that the proposed legislation was not voted on during the June 11 plenary session because of other bills listed for consideration and delays arising from unresolved floor disputes.

According to her, “The bill, which seeks to reserve legislative seats for women, was not called for a vote due to other listed bills and a delay in resolving the floor disputes.”

The group, however, noted significant progress in the constitutional review exercise, highlighting the passage of the State Police Bill by the House.

“The State Police Bill was debated and passed, showing progress in constitutional amendments,” the statement said.

The TWG disclosed that the Special Seats Bill remains on the House order paper and is expected to be considered when the National Assembly resumes on July 7, 2026.

It further revealed a key amendment to the proposal, stating that “a key development is the inclusion of two Senate seats per geopolitical zone, totalling twelve reserved seats for women.”

Commending lawmakers for supporting the State Police Bill, the coalition urged members of the House to back the gender inclusion measure.

“We commend the House for passing the State Police Bill and urge members to vote YES on Bill 20: Special Seats for Women Bill,” the statement stated.

The group reaffirmed its commitment to sustained advocacy and stakeholder engagement ahead of the next legislative session.

“The Women’s Political Participation Technical Working Group will continue engagement with legislators and media to ensure its passage,” it emphasised.

Calling on supporters to remain committed, the coalition expressed confidence in the bill’s chances of success.

“We ask all advocates and partners to stay steadfast. This bill is closer to passage than ever before,” she urged.

The proposed Special Seats Bill seeks constitutional amendments to provide an additional 12 women senators, 37 women representatives, and 3 women per state house.

These additional special seats for women aim as a temporary special measure to promote women’s representation in the legislature and strengthen inclusive governance.
