The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Most Reverend Ignatius Kaigama, has called on media organisations in Nigeria to prioritise content that promotes peace and unity.
He made the call at the anniversary celebration marking 15 years of Catholic Television of Nigeria (CTV) and one year of its presence on GOtv Channel 115, where he said the milestone was a significant achievement for the Church.
Archbishop Kaigama said “the dominance of reports centred on killings, insecurity, and social unrest is deepening anxiety among citizens,” stressing the need for a shift towards messages that inspire hope and national cohesion.
The cleric emphasised that the media has a critical role in shaping public perception and influencing societal values, urging “media professionals to use their platforms responsibly to counter divisive and harmful narratives.”
According to him, “communication should not only inform but also contribute to moral and social transformation, especially at a time when the country faces multiple challenges.”
He noted that advances in technology have made it easier to reach wider audiences, calling on media professionals and communicators to take advantage of these tools to promote peace-building and positive engagement.
Archbishop Kaigama also encouraged Nigerians to see themselves as communicators of truth in their various spheres of influence, stressing that collective effort is needed to foster a more peaceful and united society.
The event featured the recognition of individuals for their contributions to community service and societal development.
The gathering brought together clergy, media practitioners, and stakeholders to reflect on the role of communication in addressing Nigeria’s social challenges and promoting a culture of peace.
