PDP 2027: Senator Onor Launches Presidential Bid, Pledges Revival

By Chika Eze, Abuja

A former lawmaker, Senator Sandy Onor, has formally declared his intention to contest for the presidency in the 2027 general elections under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), pledging to restore the party’s glory and reposition Nigeria for greater prosperity.

Speaking at the PDP national headquarters after obtaining his expression of interest and nomination forms, Onor described the PDP as a legacy institution with a proven track record in strengthening democracy and national development.

He emphasised the party’s history of democratic values, citing its peaceful concession of defeat in 2015 as a defining moment for Nigeria’s political maturity.

According to him, the PDP has weathered internal challenges and emerged stronger, expressing confidence that the party is on the path to reclaiming national leadership.

“We have overcome our worst anxieties and challenges. We have seen vicissitudes, weathered the storms, and emerged stronger. If given the mandate, we will lead this party to even greater glory,” he said.

Onor promised a people-centered leadership approach, stressing that Nigerians remain at the heart of his vision for governance. He added that the PDP is poised to deliver what he described as “exponential greatness” for the country.

Addressing internal party disputes, the aspirant dismissed claims of lingering legal ambiguity, insisting that judicial pronouncements up to the Supreme Court have settled contentious issues.

He also responded to concerns over the stance of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who has publicly backed President Bola Tinubu for a second term.

Onor maintained that while Wike remains a key figure in the party, his personal political choices do not determine the PDP’s direction.

“Wike is a leader of the party, but he is not the party. His support for the president is his personal decision and does not reflect the position of the PDP,” he stated.

He further noted that his decision to run followed wide consultations and encouragement from stakeholders across the country, assuring Nigerians of a credible and competitive contest.

Earlier, the PDP National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, welcomed Onor’s declaration and commended his longstanding commitment to the party.

The chairman described the aspirant as an experienced grassroots politician with national reach, highlighting his previous roles in local government administration and the National Assembly.

He reaffirmed the party’s openness and commitment to a transparent process, encouraging all qualified members to participate in the 2027 electoral cycle.

“This is a victory for all members of the PDP. The platform is open to everyone willing to contest, and we will provide the necessary support to ensure a fair process,” he said.

Mohammed also called on party supporters nationwide to remain united and work collectively toward reclaiming power at the federal level.

Senator Onor expressed optimism about his chances, stating that if elected as the party’s flag bearer, he would provide courageous and responsible leadership.

He concluded by urging Nigerians to support the PDP, noting that many citizens are yearning for what he described as “PDP-style governance”.
