Association Mourns NAF Aircraft Crash Victims

The Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN) has expressed grief over the death of 25 persons in the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft crash in Igbokoda, Ondo State.

In a statement signed by its President, Sunday Odita, on Wednesday, DECAN described the October 6, 2026, crash as a tragic national loss and extended condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the victims.

The association also commiserated with the Nigerian Air Force, the Chief of the Air Staff, officers and airmen, as well as the entire Armed Forces of Nigeria, over the incident.

DECAN acknowledged the courage and sacrifices of NAF personnel who routinely undertake demanding operations in defence of the country, often under difficult and hazardous conditions.

Odita urged Nigerians to respect the dignity and privacy of the bereaved families while allowing relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

He also appealed to the public to refrain from circulating unverified information, graphic materials and speculative narratives, warning that such content could further compound the anguish of the affected families and the wider military community.

“DECAN therefore reaffirms its commitment to responsible, accurate, compassionate and professional journalism, particularly in moments of national crisis,” the association stated.

DECAN said its members, as journalists covering the Armed Forces, understood the responsibility that came with reporting tragedies involving military personnel and their families.

The association prayed for strength and fortitude for the families of the deceased and eternal rest for the souls of the departed.
