Catholic Bishop Conference Announces Nationwide Prayer, Fasting

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has called on Nigerians to intensify prayers for free, fair, credible and peaceful elections ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a statement signed by its President, Most Reverend Matthew Ndagoso, and Secretary, Most Reverend Peter Odetoyinbo, the CBCN urged dioceses, parishes, Church groups, families and individuals to participate in a nationwide programme of prayer and fasting.

The Bishops identified electoral violence, rigging, vote-buying, and ethnic and religious divisions as major challenges requiring collective commitment to justice, peace and the common good.

As part of the initiative, the CBCN has scheduled nationwide prayer activities for October 31 and November 28, 2026, as well as January 15, 2027.

A nationwide diocesan day of prayer will also be observed on December 8, 2026, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

On the parish prayer days, the programme will include fasting, the Rosary, a procession where possible, Holy Mass and the recitation of the CBCN Prayer for the 2027 general election.

The faithfuls are enjoined to fast until noon, 6 p.m. or any suitable time in between, depending on their health and circumstances.

Those unable to fast may offer prayers and other acts of sacrifice.

For the diocesan celebration on December 8, Holy Mass will begin at 3 p.m. at a designated church, presided over by the Diocesan Bishop or his delegate. The CBCN’s forthcoming Pastoral Letter, “2027 Elections: Call to Responsible Choice and Action,” will be read, alongside the recitation of the election prayer.

A rosary procession will commence at 4:30 p.m. where participants will proceed to the Cathedral, where the celebration will conclude with Eucharistic Benediction.

Theme for the CBCN’s prayer for the elections is “Let Justice and Peace Flow” taken from Amos 5::24, and it seeks God’s guidance for electoral officials, the judiciary and security agencies; integrity among political aspirants; responsible participation by voters; and the emergence of leaders committed to justice, peace and the welfare of all Nigerians.

The Bishops expressed hope that united prayers and responsible civic participation would help ensure elections that reflect the genuine will of the people and promote national unity and good governance.
