By Amina Mohammed, Lafia

Two people have died following flooding that has ravaged communities along the River Benue in the Ekye area of Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

The State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr Nawani Aboki, disclosed this during a press briefing on the flooding situation.

He said seven additional village settlements had been destroyed, bringing the number to more than 5,000 residents in Nasarawa previously reported.

Dr Aboki attributed the flooding to the overflow of the River Benue, stating that the State Emergency Management Agency had been directed to begin distributing relief materials to displaced residents.

He said the displaced persons had moved to higher ground in communities including Rukubi, Angbashim and Apanaja.

The commissioner stated that efforts were being intensified to evacuate all residents living along the river to safer areas to prevent further loss of lives and destruction of communities.

He further explained that the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency (NASEMA) the technical arm of government responsible for disaster management has conducted comprehensive visits to all impacted sites and displacement clusters.

The agency is currently compiling a detailed report to enable the state government to roll out concrete relief measures, medical supplies, and food relief to avert disease outbreaks in the displacement camps.
