China will focus on six key areas to drive high-quality development during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026–2030), according to an official from the country’s top economic planning agency.
Speaking on the latest edition of the China Economic Roundtable, an all-media talk show hosted by Xinhua News Agency, Yang Te of the National Development and Reform Commission said coordinated efforts would be made to improve people’s livelihoods, boost domestic demand and strengthen the domestic market.
Yang also stressed the need to cultivate new growth drivers and upgrade the country’s economic structure. “Without innovation, high-quality development would be like water without a source and a tree without roots,” Yang said.
He added that China would strengthen its security capacity and economic resilience by safeguarding food, energy and resources, as well as industrial and supply chains.

Other priorities include deepening reforms, expanding opening up, promoting balanced urban-rural and regional development, and accelerating the country’s green transition.
Official data showed China’s economy grew 4.7 percent year on year in the first half of 2026. The country has set a full-year growth target of between 4.5 and 5 percent, while aiming to achieve even stronger performance.
“At a time of heightened global volatility and uncertainty, China’s economic performance has demonstrated remarkable resilience and certainty,” Yang said.
