The Nigerian Army has placed greater emphasis on converting professional intelligence knowledge and operational exposure into practical solutions to emerging security threats.
The General Officer Commanding 2 Division, Major General Auwalu Mahmuda, challenged defence intelligence officers to apply lessons from their national study tour to Nigeria’s evolving security environment.
Major General Mahmuda gave the charge at Headquarters 2 Division, Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment, Ibadan, while receiving participants of the Advanced Defence Intelligence Officers Course 16/2026 led by the Commandant of the Defence Intelligence College, Commodore Usman Mainasara Bugaje.
According to a statement by the Acting Deputy Director, 2 Division Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah, the GOC emphasised that such engagements provide opportunities to share knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of contemporary security challenges.

Major General Mahmuda identified kidnapping and other criminal activities among the security challenges confronting the Division’s Area of Responsibility, while drawing particular attention to the situation around the Old Oyo National Park.
He described the visit as timely, noting that the interaction provided valuable insights into the operating environment and created an opportunity for the intelligence officers to better understand the nature of threats confronting communities within the Division’s area of responsibility.
The GOC consequently urged the participants to effectively utilise the knowledge and experience acquired during their study tour to develop workable solutions to the security challenges confronting the country.
He also commended the Commandant and his team for the visit and the quality of the interaction, stressing the importance of professional exchanges in strengthening institutional understanding and improving the collective capacity to address security threats.
The engagement brought the intelligence officers into direct contact with the operational realities of 2 Division, complementing their formal professional training with field-level perspectives on the security environment and the military response to emerging threats.
Earlier, Commodore Bugaje explained that the Defence Intelligence College has existed for more than 25 years and that the national study tour forms part of the mandatory requirements for successful completion of the course.
The Commandant also underscored the importance of integrated intelligence to the attainment of peace and security, while appreciating the GOC and commanders of 2 Division for their support towards the successful conduct of the study tour.
The programme included an operational briefing by the Commanding Officer, Administrative Battalion, 2 Division Garrison, Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Simon, who presented an overview of the security environment in Oyo State and the operational activities being undertaken by the Division.
The briefing was followed by an interactive session during which participants engaged with issues arising from the operational assessment and sought further clarification on aspects of the security environment.
The engagement ultimately reinforced the link between professional intelligence education and operational problem-solving, with the study tour providing participants an opportunity to connect classroom knowledge with the realities of contemporary security operations.
