Defence Minister Emphasises Intelligence, Technology in National Security

Nokai Origin, Abuja

Nigeria’s Defence Minister, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has emphasised intelligence-led operations, modern technology, inter-agency coordination and public trust as essential to strengthening national security, while stressing that responsible defence journalism remains important to public understanding of security operations.

Musa’s position was presented at the Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN) Conference on National Security and Awards Ceremony in Abuja under the theme, “Beyond Kinetic Warfare: Harnessing Technology and Intelligence-Led Operations for Nigeria’s National Security.”

The conference examined how intelligence, technology and professional reporting can contribute to Nigeria’s response to evolving security threats.

The Defence Minister highlighted the growing complexity of terrorism and criminal networks, noting that security effectiveness depends on identifying threats early, understanding the networks behind them and coordinating information across relevant institutions.

Troop deployments, arrests and territory recovered remain important, but preventive intelligence and timely decisions are also critical measures of operational progress.

He further stressed that technology must support, rather than replace, professional judgement. Surveillance, reconnaissance, communications and analytical systems can improve situational awareness, but their effectiveness depends on trained personnel, reliable equipment, sound doctrine and coordination among security agencies.

Musa also underscored the importance of protecting sensitive operational information while maintaining accountability.

He recognised the legitimacy of media scrutiny and called for accurate, verified reporting that respects operational considerations without weakening the public’s right to understand security developments.

In a related message, Dr Ibrahim Kana, Permanent Secretary, General Services, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, highlighted the influence of defence reporting on Nigeria’s public image and international reputation.

Drawing on his experience working with journalists in the Ministry of Defence, Kana noted that information shared through social media and other open sources can shape external assessments of Nigeria’s security environment.

Kana encouraged defence correspondents to report responsibly and accurately, while the broader discussion reinforced the need to distinguish credible reporting from unverified claims.

Positive coverage, he indicated, can help communicate progress, but professional reporting must remain grounded in facts and balanced assessments.

The conference highlighted a shared challenge for security institutions and the media: strengthening operational effectiveness while ensuring that public understanding rests on credible information. Intelligence, technology and inter-agency coordination can improve the response to threats, while independent, responsible journalism can help citizens assess progress and identify continuing challenges.
