A doctor returning from a humanitarian mission in Congo has tested positive for Ebola, marking France’s first confirmed case linked to the current outbreak, the health ministry said on Wednesday.

The patient has been placed in isolation, while health authorities have launched contact-tracing efforts to identify and monitor those who may have been exposed. The ministry added that the risk to the wider European population remains low.
Congo’s ongoing Ebola outbreak has infected more than 1,000 people and claimed 267 lives. According to the World Health Organisation, the outbreak has recorded the highest number of confirmed cases within the first month of any Ebola episode on record.
