The President of the ECOWAS Commission, General Birame Diop, has called for renewed regional solidarity, stronger international partnerships and accelerated integration as West Africa confronts mounting security, economic and geopolitical challenges.
Speaking at a high-level engagement with Ambassadors, Heads of Diplomatic Missions, Development Partners and representatives of International Organisations in Abuja, Nigerian General Diop emphasised that “regional integration had become an imperative for the future of the West African region.”
He said the engagement, which brought together members of the diplomatic community and development partners alongside the new management of the ECOWAS Commission, provided an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of sustained international cooperation in advancing the Community’s regional integration agenda.
“Regional integration is not merely an option; it is a strategic necessity. It is the most effective pathway towards building a prosperous, resilient and inclusive West Africa,” General Diop declared.
The ECOWAS Commission President expressed profound appreciation to ECOWAS’ diplomatic and development partners for their longstanding support over the organisation’s 50-year history, noting that their partnership had contributed significantly to progress in peace, security, democratic governance, regional integration, infrastructural development, humanitarian assistance and institutional strengthening.

He stressed that “ECOWAS is assuming its new chapter against the backdrop of profound global uncertainty, marked by geopolitical tensions, economic fragmentation, climate-related shocks and disruptions to global supply chains.”
The engagement with the diplomatic community came as ECOWAS entered a new phase of its institutional development, with the Commission seeking to strengthen the effectiveness and impact of regional cooperation.
