The Federal Government has signalled a new approach to military talent development by positioning organised sports as a future recruitment pipeline for the Armed Forces of Nigeria, with young athletes set to benefit from structured pathways into military service.
The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd), announced the initiative while interacting with participants at a basketball camp in Umuahia at the end of his three-day working visit to Abia State.
According to the Minister, the Armed Forces will introduce targeted sports recruitment programmes designed to identify promising athletes and create opportunities for them to combine sporting excellence with military careers.
A statement by the Special Assistant to the Minister on Media, Leah Katung-Babatunde, disclosed that General Musa described organised sports as an effective platform for developing discipline, leadership, resilience and national unity among young Nigerians.
He also announced plans for a South-East Regional Basketball Championship to expand grassroots talent development across the region and donated ₦2 million to support the ongoing basketball camp organised by the Crossover Foundation with sponsorship from Nigerian diaspora basketball stars Godsgift Achiuwa and Precious Achiuwa.
He urged parents to encourage greater participation in organised sports, stressing that investments in youth development contribute to national cohesion while creating productive opportunities for future generations.
