The European Union (EU) has congratulated Nigeria on the occasion of Democracy Day, applauding the country’s democratic progress and reaffirming its commitment to supporting inclusive governance, electoral reforms, and citizen participation.
In a statement marking the annual celebration, the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, described democracy as an ongoing process that requires active participation, accountability, and continuous engagement from citizens and institutions alike.
“Democracy is not a single moment. It is a movement, free conversations leading to decisions, millions of voices demanding to be heard and taken into account,” Mignot stated.

According to the Ambassador, Democracy Day provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s journey from military rule to democratic governance and recognise the efforts of citizens who continue to shape the nation’s future.
“Today, Nigeria marks Democracy Day, remembering the end of the dark days of dictatorship, a moment to reflect on the democratic journey and on the millions of Nigerians who continue to struggle to shape its future every single day,” he noted.
Mignot explained that Nigeria’s democracy continues to evolve through citizen participation, constructive dialogue, and the aspirations of its people. He highlighted the growing role of communities demanding accountability, young people driving civic engagement, and women expanding opportunities for leadership and representation.
“Nigeria’s democracy continues to evolve, shaped by participation, strengthened through dialogue, and driven by the energy and aspirations of its people,” the Envoy disclosed.
The Ambassador emphasised that despite numerous challenges, democratic governance in Nigeria continues to advance through resilience, reforms, and greater inclusion.
He reaffirmed the EU’s support through the EU Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) programme, which works to strengthen democratic institutions, promote civic participation, and enhance electoral processes.
“The European Union is proud to stand alongside Nigeria in that journey,” Mignot said.
He explained that the programme supports Nigeria’s electoral management body in promoting broader participation, institutional learning, and continuous improvement of electoral processes.
“The EU also collaborates with the National Peace Committee and other stakeholders to encourage peaceful political participation and strengthen national cohesion before, during, and after elections”, he emphasised.
According to the Ambassador, the EU supports legislative engagement, policy dialogue, and justice-sector collaboration aimed at enhancing accountability, democratic practice, and the rule of law.
While stressing the importance of ensuring that women, youths, and persons with disabilities are fully represented in democratic processes.
“Democracy is strongest when more voices are represented,” the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWASÂ noted.
The envoy further highlighted the significance of independent media, civic information platforms, and fact-checking networks in strengthening democratic discourse in an increasingly digital age.
“Democracy depends on participation, on accountability, on peaceful dialogue, and on citizens believing their voices still matter,” he said.
Looking ahead, Mignot said the EU would continue investing in long-term partnerships through its Global Gateway Strategy to expand opportunities, strengthen participation, and build resilience for future generations.
“Because democracy is never finished, it must never be taken for granted. It must be protected, strengthened and renewed together,” he stated.
The Ambassador added by extending warm wishes to Nigerians on Democracy Day, encouraging continued commitment to democratic values, inclusion, and national development.
