EU Launches New Conflict Prevention Initiative in Sokoto State

By Ismail Umar, Sokoto

The European Union (EU) has officially launched a new conflict prevention and resilience initiative in Sokoto State aimed at strengthening peaceful coexistence and supporting vulnerable communities affected by insecurity, climate stress, displacement, and socioeconomic challenges.

The initiative, known as RECAP – Resilience, Engagement, and Conflict Prevention for At-Risk Populations’ Protection in Sokoto State, was unveiled during an External Stakeholders’ Grant Opening Meeting held in Sokoto, Northwest Nigeria.

The 18-month project, funded by the European Union with a budget of €4.5 million, will be implemented across 10 Local Government Areas of Sokoto State and is expected to benefit more than 537,000 people.

The RECAP project is being implemented by Action Against Hunger Nigeria (ACF Nigeria), International Alert (IA), and Save The Child Initiative (STCI) in collaboration with the Sokoto State Government, local authorities, traditional institutions, civil society groups, and community leaders.

Speaking at the event, the Political Officer at the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ms. Xenia Stoll, reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to supporting Sokoto State in promoting peace, stability, and prosperity.

She described the project as a joint commitment between the EU and Sokoto State towards conflict prevention, social cohesion, and human security in Northwest Nigeria.

According to her, the initiative seeks to address the root causes of violence, including exclusion, competition over resources, and economic marginalisation, while strengthening local capacities for peace and long-term stability.

In his remarks, the Sokoto State Deputy Governor, Idris Gobir, represented by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Umar Abubakar, welcomed the intervention and commended the European Union and Action Against Hunger Nigeria for their continued support to the people of the state.

He noted that the project’s focus on dialogue, livelihoods, water governance, and protection aligns with the state government’s development and peacebuilding priorities.

“The Government of Sokoto State welcomes this important intervention and appreciates the European Union and Action Against Hunger Nigeria for their continued solidarity with our people.

“We remain committed to providing the necessary institutional support to ensure that this project delivers lasting benefits for our communities,” he said.
