The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has paid tribute to fathers across Nigeria and around the world, describing them as indispensable pillars of family stability, community resilience, and national development.
In commemoration of the 2026 Father’s Day, the Minister commended fathers for their sacrifices, dedication, and unwavering commitment to nurturing families and shaping future generations.
Reflecting on the significance of fatherhood, she likened fathers to the mighty iroko tree, whose strength and endurance provide shelter, guidance, and hope through life’s challenges.
“Fathers are the quiet architects of our homes, the steadfast guardians of our families, and the enduring pillars upon which resilient communities and prosperous nations are built,”Sulaiman-Ibrahim said.
The Minister also joined Nigerians in celebrating the leadership role of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing him as the “Father of the Nation” and acknowledging ongoing efforts by his administration to strengthen social protection systems and promote inclusive national development.
According to her, “women, children, and vulnerable populations continue to benefit from policies and programmes aimed at expanding opportunities, strengthening families, and restoring hope across the country.”
Emphasising the broader responsibilities associated with fatherhood, Sulaiman-Ibrahim noted that the role extends far beyond financial provision.
“Fatherhood is one of society’s noblest callings. It extends far beyond providing for the home; it is about nurturing character, instilling values, protecting the vulnerable, mentoring the next generation, and leading by example,” the Minister said.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim paid special tribute to fathers facing economic hardship, unemployment, displacement, ill health, and other difficult circumstances, commending their perseverance and commitment to their families despite prevailing challenges.
“Your worth is not measured solely by material provision, but by the love, values, faith, and resilience you continue to impart to your families,” she said.
The Minister also expressed solidarity with fathers separated from their children due to conflict, insecurity, abduction, trafficking, migration, or other painful circumstances, assuring them that they remain in the nation’s thoughts and prayers.
“To every father who longs to embrace a missing child, hear their laughter once more, or simply know that they are safe, we stand with you in prayer and solidarity,” Sulaiman-Ibrahim stated.
She further remembered fathers mourning the loss of children, single fathers, and those raising children with disabilities or special needs, describing their courage and sacrifices as a source of inspiration.
Highlighting government efforts to strengthen family structures, the Minister said the Father’s Day celebration aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda and the declaration of 2026 as the Year of Families and Social Development.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to implementing family-centred and social protection programmes across the country’s 774 local government areas.
“Through initiatives that promote responsible parenting, women’s economic empowerment, child protection, family strengthening, social inclusion, and community resilience, we are working to ensure that every family is empowered to thrive and every child is given the opportunity to realise his or her full potential,” she said.
Calling on fathers to continue promoting responsible parenting, integrity, compassion, and positive masculinity, Sulaiman-Ibrahim stressed the critical link between strong families and national prosperity.
She said; “As we celebrate today, let us remember that strong fathers build strong families; strong families build strong communities; and strong communities build a prosperous nation.”
“To every father across Nigeria and beyond, thank you for your sacrifices, your resilience, your quiet strength, and your enduring commitment to your families and our nation,” she added.
