The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has linked the ongoing infrastructure projects in Abuja to the electoral choices of residents ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wike made the remarks during an inspection of an ongoing road project in the Gwagwalada area of the FCT, where he commended the contractor, Gilmo Engineering, for the progress recorded on the project.
He said the road project was designed to improve transportation and living conditions for residents of the densely populated area.
The minister expressed confidence that the contractor would complete the project within the agreed timeframe, reportedly by December.
Wike said the positive reaction of residents during the inspection demonstrated the importance of infrastructure delivery to communities.
According to him, governance should ultimately improve the lives of citizens and address their needs.
He also acknowledged the support of President Bola Tinubu for development projects in the FCT, saying the administration had provided significant backing for the ongoing infrastructure programme.
At the 2027 elections, Wike said residents who benefited from government projects would be in a position to make their choices at the polls.
He linked the delivery of infrastructure projects to the electoral support he expects for President Tinubu and other candidates supported by the administration.
The minister rejected suggestions that such support could be attributed to electoral malpractice, arguing that delivering projects and responding to residents’ needs could influence voters’ decisions.
In preparations for the 2027 campaigns, Wike said political parties still had several months to organise their structures and mobilise supporters.
He noted that campaign activities had yet to reach the intensity witnessed during the 2023 election season.
Wike also disclosed that he would soon inaugurate the campaign team for President Tinubu in the FCT and lead the campaign in the territory.
He said he would subsequently return to his responsibilities as FCT minister.
Wike reaffirmed his support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Tinubu, while expressing confidence in the administration’s ongoing infrastructure projects.
The comments came as the FCT continues to witness road construction and other infrastructure activities across several communities.
