FCT Minister Pledges Resignation If Tinubu Loses FCT, Rivers

By Hudu Yakubu, Abuja

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, says he will resign from office if President Bola Tinubu loses the 2027 presidential election in the FCT and Rivers State.

Wike made the statement on Wednesday in Abuja during a meeting with members of the Apo mechanics and traders over their planned relocation to the Wasa informal sector.

He said his continued service as FCT Minister would depend on the outcome of the presidential election in the two areas.

“The presidential election is on Jan. 16, 2027. By Jan. 17, 2027, I will announce my resignation as FCT Minister should the President lose in Rivers State and the FCT,” he said.

Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, said the FCT was particularly important because it was the territory where he currently served, while Rivers was his home state.

“FCT is where I work. Rivers is my state. If I cannot deliver where I work, then I’m not worthy to be here.

“If I lose FCT, I have no business being the minister.

“If I go back to my state and the President cannot win, then why am I shouting about President, President, President when I cannot win?

“If I don’t deliver this, remove me here. I will accept it,” he said.

The Minister also spoke about his political activities ahead of the 2027 elections, saying members of different political parties were being mobilised under the Rainbow Coalition in support of President Tinubu.

He urged residents and political supporters in the FCT to participate in the electoral process.

Wike also assured members of the Apo mechanics and traders that arrangements were underway for their relocation to the Wasa informal sector by the end of the year.

He said the administration was also undertaking physical enumeration of beneficiaries ahead of the relocation.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Apo trading and mechanics community.
