The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has put mitigative measures to prevent the loss of lives and properties of residents in Abuja throughout the 2023 rainy season.

The Director, Forecasting Response Mitigation of FEMA, Mrs Florence Wenegieme, stated this while addressing newsmen shortly after blocking a slip road by the Galadimawa Interchange/Roundabout on Thursday in Abuja.

Wenegieme said that the Director-General of FEMA, Dr Abbas Idriss while acting on the orders of the FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Bello, the Minister of State, Dr Ramatu Aliyu and the Permanent Secretary of FCTA, Mr Olusade Adesola, directed that the road be closed.

The onset of rain starts in May and that is why we made it necessary to block this road that comes from the Games Village heading towards Galadimawa Interchange popularly known as Galadimawa roundabout.

“‘You are aware of what has been happening around this road every year and to the glory of God since 2020, 2021 and 2022 no life has been lost in this area because we made a tradition to block the road during raining season.”

The director said that anytime there was a heavy downpour the road is always flooded which leads to flash floods in the area.

Wenegieme listed other roads that would be closed to include Dogongada in Lokogoma District, Damagazan box Kolbet behind Gudu Market, Apo-Dutse behind Cedar Crest Hospital and many other places.

These are all done according to her to avert fatalities in the capital.
