Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd.), and former Information Minister, Lai Mohammed, have described late former President Muhammadu Buhari as a patriot, disciplined leader, and devoted servant of Nigeria.
They paid tribute to the former President in Abuja during a memorial marking the first anniversary of his death and the presentation of the book “From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari”.
Gowon recalled his decades-long relationship with Buhari, saying the late President was a gallant soldier who dedicated his life to Nigeria’s unity and progress.
“We served together as soldiers, and all of us did our best to keep this country united. I knew him as a gallant soldier and a man who earned respect,” Gowon said.
Chairman of the organising committee and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, said the memorial offered an opportunity to reflect on Buhari’s lifelong commitment to national service as a military officer, Head of State and democratically elected President.
“Today is not merely about recalling the passing of a former President. It is an occasion to reflect on a life of service,” Mustapha said.
Former Information Minister Lai Mohammed described Buhari as an exceptional patriot whose honesty, integrity, humility and compassion distinguished him from many leaders.
He said Buhari’s death was a personal loss, describing the late President as a mentor, leader and father figure. He also praised Buhari’s unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity throughout his public life.
Speaking on behalf of the Buhari family, Safina Buhari thanked dignitaries and well-wishers for honouring her father’s memory. She said the event highlighted the values he cherished, including faith, integrity, discipline, humility and selfless service.
The memorial attracted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Heads of State, senior government officials, diplomats, religious leaders and members of the Buhari family.
