G7 Leaders Begin Summit in France

Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations have begun a summit in the French resort town of Evian-les-Bains amid concerns over President Donald Trump’s tariff threats and Washington’s role in the global order.

The meeting, taking place from June 15 to June 17, is focusing on the next steps following the preliminary U.S.-Iran peace agreement, the war in Ukraine, global trade imbalances and efforts to reduce dependence on China for critical minerals.

Tensions remain high after Trump warned he could impose a 100 per cent tariff on French wine unless France removes its digital tax on U.S. technology firms.

During the summit, Trump is expected to hold talks with Middle Eastern leaders and meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as Ukraine seeks continued military support against Russia.

G7 leaders are also expected to seek details of the U.S.-Iran agreement, including plans to reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil and gas shipments.

For French President Emmanuel Macron, the summit represents a major diplomatic moment in his final presidential term as he pushes for greater cooperation on global economic challenges despite renewed trade tensions with the United States.
