Germany’s Foreign Minister Visits Nigeria for Bilateral Talks

Germany’s Foreign Minister, Mr Johann Wadephul, will visit Nigeria from July 21 to July 22 for high-level talks with Nigerian government officials aimed at strengthening bilateral relations, expanding trade and investment, and enhancing regional cooperation.

The Head of Press and Political Counsellor at the German Embassy, Mr Felix Haala, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja.

Haala said Wadephul would visit Abuja and Lagos, accompanied by a business delegation comprising chief executive officers and senior executives of leading German companies in the IT and energy sectors, as well as members of the German Parliament.

According to him, the minister will hold talks in Abuja with Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mrs Bianca Odumegwu-Ujukwu, and the President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Dr Omar Touray.

He said the discussions would focus on regional developments, peace and security, economic integration, and opportunities to strengthen cooperation between Germany and West Africa.

Haala added that the Lagos leg of the visit would centre on boosting economic and cultural relations, with Wadephul scheduled to participate in a business roundtable involving German and Nigerian companies.

He said the forum would highlight the growing economic partnership between both countries and explore new opportunities for trade and investment.

According to Haala, Germany and Nigeria maintain a strong partnership founded on mutual respect and shared interests, with Nigeria remaining one of Germany’s most important partners in Africa.

He noted that the visit underscores Germany’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Nigeria and the wider West African region in areas including sustainable economic development, energy transition, and regional peace and security.
