Former President Goodluck Jonathan has praised former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar for steering Nigeria through a successful transition to civilian rule, describing his handover of power in May 1999 as a defining moment in the country’s democratic journey.
Dr Jonathan lauded General Abdulsalami’s courage, discipline and democratic credentials, saying he defied pressure to prolong military rule and instead ensured a swift transition that returned Nigeria to democratic governance within 11 months of assuming office.
He noted that the handover marked a significant turning point for the nation, strengthening democratic institutions and affirming the supremacy of constitutional governance.

The ex-president, who spoke at the launch of three books in honour of Abdulsalami in Abuja, said the former Head of State played a significant role in Nigeria’s transition to and consolidation of democratic rule.
“If there is anybody we can give credit to for stabilising democracy in Nigeria today, it is General Abdulsalami Abubakar.
“A military Head of State, surrounded by military officers, armed personnel and all the instruments of power, with people urging him to remain in office, yet he had the courage to say no. That takes somebody with an uncommon commitment to the peace and progress of the country,” Jonathan said.
He noted that Abdulsalami’s decision to relinquish power as promised not only strengthened public confidence in democratic governance but also set a lasting example of leadership guided by principle, integrity and commitment to the national interest.
According to Dr Jonathan, the transition laid the groundwork for Nigeria’s uninterrupted democratic experience and reinforced the country’s constitutional order.
“At a defining moment in our nation’s history, he demonstrated uncommon courage and selflessness by guiding Nigeria through a peaceful transition that restored democratic governance and renewed hope in the future of our country.”
He said Abdulsalami’s respect for Nigeria’s transition schedule and willingness to relinquish power in the national interest distinguished him as a true democrat, noting that the former Head of State placed the country’s future above personal ambition.
Dr Jonathan added that the decision strengthened democratic institutions and helped establish a culture of constitutional governance that has endured for more than two decades.
“We must commend Abdulsalami Abubakar. When the time came to leave office, he left. That decision helped shape the democratic stability we enjoy today,” he said.
Jonathan described Abdulsalami as belonging to a rare class of leaders whose influence transcends the offices they occupied, noting that his legacy rests on humility, patriotism and statesmanship.
He said the former Head of State’s contributions extended far beyond his brief tenure in office, particularly through his leadership of the National Peace Committee, which has played a significant role in promoting peaceful elections and national cohesion.
“Beyond his tenure in office, General Abdulsalami has remained a steadfast advocate of peace, dialogue, national unity and democratic stability,” Jonathan said.
“Through the National Peace Committee, he has continued to promote peaceful elections, conflict resolution and nation-building initiatives across the country.” The Former President stated.
Dr Jonathan also recognised Gen. Abdulsalami’s role in promoting peace and stability across the African continent, recalling his involvement in mediation and conflict resolution efforts in Sudan and other countries facing political and security challenges.
He described the unveiling of the three books as a significant contribution to the documentation of Nigeria’s history, noting that they capture valuable lessons in leadership, service and nation-building.
According to Dr Jonathan, the publications would help preserve Abdulsalami’s legacy and provide future generations with a reliable account of the contributions and public service of one of Nigeria’s most respected statesmen.
“As we celebrate General Abdulsalami today, we are reminded that nations are built not only by policies and institutions but also by the character of those who lead them,” he said.
“His life offers enduring lessons in integrity, humility, patriotism and commitment to national service.”
Dr Goodluck Jonathan also congratulated the former Head of State on attaining the age of 84 and commended the authors, editors and contributors involved in the production of the books.
He prayed for continued good health, wisdom and strength for the elder statesman, expressing hope that his legacy would continue to inspire future generations of Nigerians to place national interest above personal ambition.
“May his legacy continue to inspire generations of Nigerians to place country above self and service above personal ambition,” Jonathan said.
The books presented at the event documented General Abdulsalami’s life and military career, highlighting his stewardship of Nigeria’s transition to democratic rule as well as his contributions to peacebuilding, conflict resolution and the promotion of democratic governance across Africa.
