The Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC), has declared candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winners of the chairmanship elections in the 13 local government areas of the state.
The commission said the elections were generally peaceful, free and fair, while voting commenced at 8am, and ended in most polling units without major security challenges.
Declaring the results in Abakaliki, the state capital, the Chairman of the commission, Patrick Enyi said the commission deployed trained ad hoc staff, security personnel, and election materials, covering the various polling units and wards across the 13 local government areas of the state.
He said the results were collated and verified before they were received from the various local government returning officers and subsequently announced in accordance with the provisions of the state electoral law.
The chairman of APC in Ebonyi State, Stanley Okoro-Emegha told reporters in Abakaliki, that he was not surprised by the resounding victory of the party at the polls.
Okoro-Emegha noted that the party had campaigned extensively from the state level down to wards and polling units, that the local government election was a test case for the 2027 general election.
He expressed confidence that the APC would retain its dominance in the state and dismissed claims by some opposition parties that they were unaware of the election.
According to him, “Political parties seeking elective positions must prepare, campaign and engage voters rather than expect to be reminded when elections are approaching.”
Okoro-Emegha urged the newly elected chairmen and councillors to see their victory as a call to service, pointing out that their responsibility was not merely to win elections but to implement the APC manifesto and deliver good governance to the electorate.
Those who were elected include, Osborne, son of the Works Minister, David Umahi, who was elected chairman of the Ohaozara Local Government Area.
Others are, Peace Agwu, Ishielu Local Government Area; Chinedu Mkpuma, Ezza South; Chidi Nwode, Ikwo; Friday Nwuhuo, Ezza North; Paul Ituma, Ohaukwu; Timothy Nwachi, Afikpo and Ikechukwu Ogbofia in Onicha Local Government Area.
The rest include; Michael Anyim, Ivo; Simeon Onuoha, Edda; Helen Aduga, Izzi; Chidiebere Alo, Abakaliki; while Chibueze Odigwe was elected in Ebonyi Local Government Area.
