ICPC, Xinhua Explore Partnership On Anti-Corruption Reportage

Nigeria’s Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and China’s Xinhua News Agency have explored a media partnership to strengthen information exchange, improve anti-corruption reporting and raise international awareness of the country’s efforts to combat corruption and illicit financial flows.

The discussions took place when ICPC Chairman, Musa Adamu Aliyu received a Xinhua delegation led by the agency’s Deputy President for Africa, Gui Tao, at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The meeting focused on news sharing, professional training and technical cooperation between the two institutions.

Gui Tao stressed the importance of accurate and balanced reporting in promoting international cooperation, expressing Xinhua’s readiness to collaborate with the ICPC in communicating the commission’s anti-corruption initiatives to international audiences.

He noted that corruption transcended national borders and required cooperation among institutions and media organisations.

Welcoming the delegation, Aliyu described the proposed partnership as an opportunity to strengthen Nigeria-China relations and support efforts to combat corruption.

The ICPC chairman identified illicit financial flows and the cross-border movement of proceeds of crime as areas requiring greater cooperation, noting that such activities often involved multiple jurisdictions.

He emphasised the media’s role in shaping public understanding of corruption and encouraging citizens to support accountability.

Aliyu also called on Xinhua to support the commission’s Media and Public Communication Unit through technology transfer and professional training for its personnel.

He explained that the proposed support would strengthen the unit’s capacity to disseminate information and communicate the commission’s activities more effectively.

Gui Tao reaffirmed Xinhua’s commitment to providing technical support and training opportunities for ICPC media personnel.

He said the agency’s international platform could help showcase Nigeria’s anti-corruption reforms and achievements to a wider global audience.

Gui Tao also described the proposed collaboration as mutually beneficial, with integrity and public accountability serving as shared principles.

Xinhua, China’s state news agency, maintains an international reporting network and a presence across Africa, covering areas including economic development, trade, culture and social issues.

For the ICPC, the proposed cooperation could broaden the reach of its public communication and make information about its anti-corruption work more accessible to audiences outside Nigeria.

Details of the proposed partnership, including its implementation timeline and specific activities, were not provided in the announcement.
