Information Minister Pledges Government Support for Creative Economy

Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris has assured that the government will intervene to strengthen the policy, institutional and financing framework for the creative economy.

Speaking during the 5th edition of the Nigerian Electronic Media Content Exhibition and Awards NEMCEA 2026, held in Lagos with the theme; “The Creators Economy Elevate Your Craft, Secure Your Future” .

The Minister who was represented by the Director General, Advertising Regulatory Commission of Nigeria, ARCON, Dr Lekan Fadolapo said the administration of President Bola Tinubu recognises the importance of the creative sector in building the economy, and therefore driving its policies in that direction.

He mentioned that in the past years the government has initiated numerous programmes to bolster the creative ecosystem and would continue to leverage the vast opportunity in the sector.

According to him, “the creative economy is being increasingly positioned as a serial contributor to economic growth, employment and global influence. And already, the Nigerian government has approved initiatives including the Creative Economic Employment Fund and the Creative and Tourism Infrastructure Corporation, among other programmes, intended to support skills development, mentorship, access to funding, technology and other resources for creative professionalism and enterprises.”

Sustainable Platform

The Minister also advocated for a sustainable platform to protect talents media contents and ensure a regulatory framework to thrive in today’s digital landscape.

He maintained that to secure the future while elevating the craft, Nigerian creators must pay greater attention to quality, understand issues around intellectual property, improve business management, learn how to negotiate contracts, protect rights, reach new audiences, and build a sustainable environment for the sector.

In his remark, Nigeria’s former Minister for Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed enjoined practitioners in the sector to think beyond the country’s borders during the conceptual stage of content creation, stressing that national culture, norms and values must be considered.

“Our task is to package the aspect of our culture to the global audience without diluting the cultural values and we must make our stories I mistakenly Nigeria.” he said

The Director General, National Broadcasting Commission, Dr. Charles Ebuebu called for the protection of the intellectual property and value of content produced by Nigerians.

He said that Nigeria’s creative economy has enormous cultural and commercial potential, saying that NEMCEA has again provided the platform for exhibitors, content providers and stakeholders to meet and discuss the future of the industry.

This event brought together Creators, broadcasters, producers, advertisers, investors, distributors, technology providers, regulators and policy makers to chat a new course for the development of the contents ecosystem.
