Addressing participants, Governor Namadi stressed that the annual festival has evolved beyond a traditional event into a strategic platform for development.

“The Kalgwai Fishing Festival is not just about culture or history; it is a bold step towards prioritising fisheries development in our state,” he stressed.

He highlighted ongoing interventions already yielding results, including the restocking of water bodies, production of millions of fingerlings, and support for local fishermen through training and modern equipment.

“These efforts are designed to increase fish production, enhance livelihoods, and ensure sustainable management of aquatic resources,” the Governor explained

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment, Namadi disclosed that significant allocations have been made in the 2026 budget to strengthen livestock and fisheries development through infrastructure, capacity building, and partnerships.

He also noted the festival’s role in fostering unity across communities.

“It brings our people together fishermen, herders, and farmers, strengthening our shared identity and cooperation,” Namadi added.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Livestock Development, Professor Abdurrahman Salim, described the festival as both a cultural showcase and an economic catalyst.

He revealed that the state government has approved the hatching of five million fish to boost production, alongside plans to distribute modern fishing equipment to cooperatives.

Professor Salim further pointed to Jigawa’s vast potential, noting the presence of over 243 water bodies rich in commercially viable fish, making the sector critical for employment, nutrition, and income generation.

A press statement by the Governor’s Chief press secretary Hamisu Gumel said, the festival, first introduced in 2003 and recently revived, the Kalgwai Fishing Festival continues to serve as a key platform for promoting fisheries development, strengthening community ties, and expanding economic opportunities across
