Jordan, Iraq Sign Nine Agreements to Boost Ties

Jordan and Iraq have signed nine agreements to strengthen bilateral cooperation in trade, education, environmental protection and other key sectors.

The agreements were signed on Monday in Amman, following talks between Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan and his Iraqi counterpart, Ali al-Zaidi, according to a statement from the Jordanian Prime Ministry.

The agreements cover diplomatic cooperation, competition and anti-monopoly policies, consumer protection, support for small and medium-sized enterprises, the preservation of documents and manuscripts, higher education, scientific research and environmental protection.

During their meeting, the two prime ministers also discussed ways to accelerate joint projects in energy, transport, electricity interconnection and security.

Earlier, Jordan’s King, Abdullah II met with al-Zaidi and reaffirmed Jordan’s support for Iraq’s role in promoting regional security and stability.

The agreements come amid growing economic ties between the two neighbouring countries.

Official statistics showed that bilateral trade rose by 14 per cent in the first eight months of the year, reaching 1.131 billion US dollars, compared with 992 million dollars during the same period a year earlier.

The latest agreements are expected to provide a framework for deeper cooperation and stronger economic relations between Jordan and Iraq.
