The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate for the Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections, Chief Tochukwu Ogalagu, has called for the strengthening of Nigeria’s democratic institutions and the conduct of credible elections as the country marks the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
Ogalagu made the call in a statement issued on Thursday to commemorate June 12, describing the occasion as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey and a reminder of the sacrifices made by citizens in the struggle for democratic governance.
He said Democracy Day symbolises the resilience of Nigerians and their commitment to constitutional rule, justice, electoral integrity and the supremacy of the people’s will.
According to him, the annual celebration remains an opportunity to honour the heroes of democracy who stood firm in the face of adversity following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the most free and fairest in the nation’s history.
The APGA candidate stressed the need for all stakeholders to uphold democratic values and ensure that electoral processes remain transparent, credible and reflective of the wishes of the electorate.
“As we celebrate democracy, we must renew our commitment to justice, fairness, equity, accountability and respect for the sovereign will of the people. Democracy cannot thrive where electoral manipulation, voter intimidation and result falsification are tolerated,” he stated.

Ogalagu urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and actively participate in safeguarding the nation’s democracy by protecting the sanctity of the ballot and promoting peaceful political engagement.
He also congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima on the occasion of Democracy Day, commending their efforts in strengthening democratic governance and promoting national development.
The APGA flag bearer similarly praised Ebonyi State Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for his commitment to peace and infrastructural development in the state, while acknowledging the contributions of the First Lady, Chief Mrs. Mary-Maudline Uzoamaka Nwifuru, and Deputy Governor Patricia Obila to governance and social development.
Ogalagu further expressed appreciation to the leadership of APGA at the national, zonal and state levels for their commitment to the growth of the party and the advancement of democratic ideals.
While acknowledging the efforts of the Federal Government, he maintained that APGA remains a viable alternative platform capable of providing people-oriented leadership and effective governance.
He expressed confidence that the party would record significant electoral success in the 2027 general elections through the support of the electorate.

The APGA candidate reiterated his commitment to providing effective representation for the people of Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency if elected, through job creation, youth empowerment, agricultural modernisation, industrial expansion, digital infrastructure and improved security.
He said efforts would also be directed toward strengthening small and medium-scale enterprises, improving access to credit for farmers and traders, enhancing healthcare and education and promoting policies aimed at improving the welfare of citizens.
As political activities ahead of the 2027 elections gather momentum, Ogalagu called on politicians and their supporters to embrace issue-based campaigns, tolerance and democratic civility.
He warned against political violence, divisive rhetoric and actions capable of undermining the credibility of the electoral process, emphasising that democracy flourishes when citizens freely exercise their rights and leaders remain accountable to the people.
The APGA candidate urged Nigerians to continue supporting democratic institutions and to elect leaders based on competence, integrity, character and proven capacity to deliver good governance.
He expressed optimism that Nigeria would continue to advance on the path of democracy, peace and sustainable development through collective commitment to democratic principles and national unity.
