The Kaduna State Climate Change Accountability Mechanism (KADCCAM) has secured the donation of 5,000 tree seedlings from the Kaduna State Horticulture Association to strengthen climate action, promote environmental sustainability and expand afforestation efforts across the state.
The donation, comprising both economic and non-economic tree species, followed a strategic advocacy and partnership meeting between KADCCAM and the leadership of the Kaduna State Horticulture Association in Kaduna on Monday.
Leading the KADCCAM delegation, Shehu Dalhat and Rev. Michael Ikpa expressed appreciation to the Association for the donation, describing it as a significant contribution to the state’s efforts to combat climate change, restore degraded landscapes and enhance environmental resilience.
Chairman of the Kaduna State Horticulture Association, Bala Umar, commended KADCCAM for fostering collaboration between government institutions and civil society organisations to address climate challenges.
He reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote afforestation, sustainable agriculture, climate resilience and environmental protection in Kaduna State.
Also speaking, the Executive Director of Jobulb EduConsult, Joyce Adeji, stressed the need for inclusive climate governance, urging government agencies, civil society organisations, educational institutions and community leaders to actively engage citizens, particularly students and young people, in climate action initiatives.
She advocated the establishment of Climate Clubs in schools and communities to promote environmental awareness, encourage sustainable agricultural practices and build long-term climate resilience.
Adeji also noted that agriculture was humanity’s earliest form of education before the advent of formal Western education, stressing the need to combine indigenous agricultural knowledge with modern scientific innovations to improve food security and climate-smart agricultural productivity.
KADCCAM also commended its leadership, particularly the Civil Society Co-Chair, Ibrahima Yakubu, and the Government Co-Chair, Dr Abubakar Buba, for their commitment to advancing climate accountability and strengthening partnerships that continue to deliver positive environmental outcomes in Kaduna State.
The organisation described the donation of the 5,000 tree seedlings as a significant milestone in ongoing efforts to increase tree cover, conserve biodiversity, restore degraded ecosystems and mitigate the effects of climate change.
