Kano Police Launch Unit to Tackle Violent Crime

By Salihu Ali, Kano

The Nigeria Police Force in Kano State, North West Nigeria, has launched a new Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) aimed at strengthening security and improving rapid response to violent crimes across the state.

Speaking during the inauguration of the unit’s operational office in Kano, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, described the launch as a major step toward ensuring safer communities and combating violent crimes with professionalism and speed.

According to him, the VCRU was established on April 24, 2026, in line with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rulwan Disu, and the provisions of the Nigeria Police Act 2020.

Bakori explained that the specialised tactical unit was created to decisively tackle armed robbery, kidnapping, hijacking, and other violent crimes threatening public safety and economic activities in Kano State.

Our goal is simple: reduce response time, dominate the public space, and deny criminals the freedom to operate in the state,” the police commissioner stated.

He noted that the command had carefully selected trained and dedicated officers for the unit, adding that all personnel underwent rigorous training in tactical response, intelligence handling, professional conduct, and human rights compliance.

Displaying integrity and respect for human rights will remain the guiding principle of this VCRU operation. I take personal responsibility for the conduct, performance, and public image of this unit,” Bakori said.

The commissioner said that the VCRU would operate through intelligence-led policing, real-time information gathering, and active community engagement to build public trust and improve security operations.

To ensure accountability, CP Bakori disclosed that a State Civilian Oversight Board comprising civil society leaders, traditional rulers, legal practitioners, and community representatives had been established to monitor the activities of the unit.

Bakori also announced the creation of a dedicated public complaint desk and emergency hotlines to enable residents to report violent crime incidents promptly.

The VCRU headquarters is located at Bank Road, adjacent to Metro Area Command in the Kano metropolis.

The police commissioner commended the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, for supporting security agencies and promoting collaboration in tackling insecurity across the state.

He thanked the good people of Kano State for their continuous support and cooperation with the police in efforts to keep the state safe.
