Kano Task Force Engages US Embassy on Drug Control

By Ladan Nasidi, Kano

The Kano State Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking has engaged the United States Embassy in Nigeria to strengthen counter-narcotics operations and explore broader development support for the state.

The engagement is aimed at improving inter-agency collaboration, strengthening institutional capacity and expanding community-based interventions to address drug abuse and illicit trafficking in Kano State.

According to a statement issued by the Task Force on Thursday, its chairman, Muhuyi Magaji Rimin Gado, led a delegation to the US Embassy, where he met with the Director of the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), Mr Tolliver Derrick, and other officials of the US mission.

The meeting focused on strategies for strengthening a coordinated, multi-agency response to drug-related challenges, with discussions covering intelligence-led enforcement, technical assistance, institutional capacity building, community-based prevention and specialised rehabilitation programmes.

Both sides also explored  interventions targeting vulnerable groups, particularly young people, who are disproportionately affected by the consequences of drug abuse.

The discussions extended to opportunities for aligning counter-narcotics initiatives with broader United States government development programmes that could benefit Kano State.

Speaking on the importance of a comprehensive approach to tackling drug abuse, Rimin Gado stressed that enforcement alone would not be sufficient to address the growing challenges associated with drug use and illicit trafficking.

He emphasised the need to complement law enforcement operations with effective prevention strategies, rehabilitation services and active community participation.

According to the chairman, a sustainable response requires coordinated efforts among relevant government agencies, development partners and local communities to address both the supply of illicit drugs and the underlying factors contributing to drug abuse.

The engagement also underscored the importance of building stronger institutional partnerships to improve the effectiveness and sustainability of counter-narcotics interventions across the state.

The meeting ended with a commitment to establish mechanisms for formalising technical cooperation and implementing joint programmes aimed at strengthening drug abuse prevention, enforcement and rehabilitation efforts in Kano State.

The proposed collaboration is expected to provide a framework for sustained engagement between the Task Force and relevant United States agencies in addressing drug-related challenges and supporting wider development priorities in the state.
