The Katsina State Government has trained key stakeholders on the interpretation and dissemination of seasonal climate forecasts to enhance community preparedness for climate-related hazards, following the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s (NiMet) 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction.
The prediction projected an early onset of rainfall in parts of the state and warned of weather-related risks across the country.
The capacity-building workshop, organised by the Katsina State Climate Change Secretariat, brought together government officials, climate experts, extension officers, civil society organisations and media practitioners under the theme, “Strengthening Community Resilience Through Seasonal Climate Early Warning Information Dissemination.”
Speaking at the end of the training, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Climate Change, Professor Mohammad Al-Ameen, said the initiative was designed to equip participants with the skills to interpret and communicate seasonal climate forecasts to communities, particularly farmers and pastoralists whose livelihoods depend on timely weather information.
Professor Al-Ameen urged participants to pass on the knowledge gained to their respective communities to improve preparedness for flooding, drought and other extreme weather events, stressing that early warning information is critical to protecting lives, livelihoods and agricultural production.
He said the workshop aligns with Governor Dikko Umaru Radda’s commitment to strengthening climate resilience through capacity building, scientific innovation and community engagement.
The training featured technical sessions on seasonal climate forecasting, climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction and effective communication of early warning information. Participants are expected to replicate the training within their institutions and communities to broaden awareness and strengthen local resilience.
